Parks and Conservation in a Changing World

变化世界中的国家公园与保护

【讲座简介】

Parks and Protected Areas play an essential role for protection of nature. Historically, parks have often been viewed as a commitment to preserve nature undisturbed, and to offer glimpses of how landscapes used to look before being altered by human activities. This view was especially prevalent in the Western United States, where the modern conservation movement unfolded alongside colonization by Euro-Americans. After WWII, the great national parks became increasingly popular as large numbers of people purchased cars and began to travel more. Now, in 2022, we are facing three great challenges for the future of parks. First, society is becoming increasingly urbanized, and many people do not have easy access to natural areas to enjoy their benefits. Second, in the United States, we are recognizing that the ideal of parks as undisturbed nature was only achieved by removing Native Americans, and their presence was an essential part of landscape processes, especially fire. And last, climate change is causing ever greater impacts on natural ecosystems, and the natural resources parks were set aside to protect are disappearing, changing, or shifting geographically. This is leading to a new emphasis on large landscape conservation, beyond the boundaries of any one park. With this background, we can have a good discussion and question/answer about how these issues may be presenting different challenges in China and the United States.
