Prof.Zhou Qiong Attend EAEH2013
The Second Conference of East Asian Environmental History (EAEH2013) was conducted at National Dong Hwa University, Taiwan in October 24-26 (Thursday-Saturday), 2013. Under the general theme of “Transformation of East Asian Environment in Historical Perspective: Local Reality and Global Connection”, all papers and panels have been organized into 21 sessions focusing on different sub-themes such as, conceptual view of environmental history, forest management, environmental policy history, attitude toward nature, nature in the 20th century, natural hazards, disaster and prevention, marine resources and imperialism, biological resources and imperialism, land use, water resources, pollution, Taiwan’s post-war local environmental history, and American environmental legacies in the Philippines.
Professor Zhou Qiong from the Institute of Southwest Environmental History gave a presentation titled "The Orgins of the Drought in Southwest China: An Environmental History Study (2009-2013) —— From the Perspective of A Yunnan Native Researcher" in Paralell Session 4.4: Disaster and Prevention. Her presentation concentrated on Rationale of the Problem, Disaster from Neighbor Regions - Influence of Cross-region Disaster, Root Problem of the Drought - the Consequence of Traditional Thoughts and Life Style for Survival, the Human Cause of the Drought - the Implementation of Economics Policies and Conclusion and Other Issues. During this conference, Prof. Zhou made communications with many famous scholars of environmental history abroad, tried to promote the internationalization level of our research on Southwest environmental history.
"As environmental history has been developed into a field of study since the 1970s in the world and even though the steps in East Asia seems to be a little bit slower, more and more scholars specialized in history and other disciplines have devoted to do environmental history", said Ts’ui-jung Liu, who has laid a foundation of Chinese environmental history. She believes scholars concerning East Asian environmental history will not only try to establish this sub-field into a solid interdisciplinary academic ground but also to contribute to the world environmental history as a whole. And so does the research of Southwest environmental history.
